Assistive Listening Devices

Assistive listening devices are designed to improve listening in adverse environments. ALDs can vary from person to person and include listening devices for the telephone, television or coupled with hearing aids for use in meeting or restaurants. Other available ALDs are for children who may need to improve their listening skills in the classroom due to hearing loss, Auditory Processing or Attention Deficit. We carry many items that can assist you if you find yourself or a family member in one of the situations listed above. Just give us a call or send us an email, and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Auditory Processing Evaluations

Auditory Processing is 'what we do with what we hear'. An auditory processing disorder is the inability to attend to, recognize, discriminate, or understand auditory information you 'hear' and listen to. When there is a breakdown in any of these auditory processing functions, it will result in the reduced ability for your child to learn through hearing. Most people with auditory processing disorders have normal hearing and normal intelligence. For more information click here to download Auditory Processing Information sheet. If you are concerned your child may have Auditory Processing problems please call our office for a consultation.

Hearing Assessment for All Ages

Behavioral Observation Audiometry is for infants younger than 6 months of age. The infant's behaviors (eye widening, eye blinking, sucking patterns and other physical behaviors) are observed by during the presentation of different levels of sounds. This type of testing is done in the soundfield (with speakers) and therefore ear specific information is not available. The response generated by the infant is usually that of the composite/better ear.

Visual Reinforcement Audiometry is recommended to evaluate children 6 months of age and older. With VRA, the child is trained to respond to speech and different sounds using lights and toys as reinforcers. This type of testing can be performed in the soundfield or using headphones/insert earphones to obtain ear specific information.

Play Audiometry is recommended for toddlers developmentally age-appropriate for game-like activities. Play audiometry is usually attempted beginning at age 2 and up. Like VRA, this test can be performed either in the soundfield or using headphones/insert earphones.

Standard Audiometric testing is used for adolescents through geriatrics where speech and tones are delivered via headphones.

Impedance testing involves the assessment of the middle ear system. These tests (Tympanometry and Acoustic Reflexes) evaluate the ear canal, eardrum, middle ear cavity and the middle ear muscles. Middle ear pathology such as impacted wax, middle ear effusion (fluid), ear infections, and eardrum perforations can be easily and quickly diagnosed or ruled out.

Otoacoustic Emission testing is performed on all ages and does not require participation. Pulse-like sounds are sent through the ear to the hearing nerve by a tiny probe placed in the ear canal. OAEs are not used as a test of hearing acuity; however they can determine whether the hearing nerve is capable of picking up high pitch (frequency) sounds. Usually, passing OAEs will rule out anything greater than a mild hearing loss.
